After Life - This is a delightfully crafted story of case workers at a train station between the heavens who aid the recently departed to single out a lone moment from their pasts to live inside forever. This is a peaceful, poetic assessment of life, death, and memory, filled with soft humor and thankfully free of some feel-good platitudes. Sugar Town - Engaging mosaic of LA life characterizing a handful of characters whose lives fit together - a musician would-be who’ll do anything to get ahead, an uptight lone woman who allures the wrong men like a magnet, and a band made up of cleaned-up ’80s rock stars, to name a few. Made on a shoestring, although sharp and well recognized; superb cast contains a number of actual musicians. Cast includes Ally Sheedy, Rosanna Arquette, John Taylor, Jade Gordon, Michael Des Barres, Lucinda Jenney, and Martin Kemp.

Rhapsody in Blue - Hollywood biography of George Gershwin is largely fiction, although comes off better than most other composer biographies, seizing Gershwin’s excitement for his work, and some of his central conflicts. Cast includes Robert Aida, Joan Leslie, Alexis Smith, Oscar Levant, Charles Coburn, Hazel Scott, and Al Jolson.

The Horse Whisperer - After her daughter is gravely injured in a horse riding accident, her prosperous mother takes the horse to a famous horse whisperer in Montana. A romance between the two follows.

Music for Millions - Teary account of war-newlywed Allyson, a cellist in Iturbi’s orchestra, nobly delaying to have a baby for her husband’s return. O’Brien is her gifted baby sister. When there’s lots of Chopin and Debussy, Durante robs the motion picture with boredom. Cast includes Margaret O’Brien, Jimmy Durante, June Allyson, Marsha Seek, Hugh Herbert, Marie Wilson, Larry Adler, and Ethel Griffies.
