Metallica’s Rise To Fame: The 5 Songs That Got Them there… November 16, 2009
These are five different songs that opened Metallica up to different audiences. Metallica has so many fans, of so many different groups, and these groups discovered Metallica through these songs:
5 ” Dyers Eve ” – And Justice for All…
This is a amazingly fast song that played to the thrash and speed metal fans. This song is so intense that Metallica has a hard time trying to play it today like they did when they first released it. This song is very seldom played life but it has been played a few times on select tours. This song, known for its powerful chords, opened up Metallica’s first fans (heavy metal, speed metal fans) to Metallica’s ability and level of expertise.
4 Hero of the Day – Load
One of Metallica’s first slower paced songs. Though it picks up tempo in the middle, it was rejected at first by Metallica’s fan-base for being too slow and rockish. The Load album was the first of Metallicas alternative rock experiment and many fans did not approve. However, many alternative rock fans found this song to be very good and it is now known as one of Metallica’s most famous songs.
3 Until it Sleeps – Load
James delves into a new, more atheistic voice in this song. The song was written when James was dealing with troubling religious beliefs in his family. James mother had the belief that God would heal her life threatening illness, she died from not taking her life saving medication. James confronts the different viewpoints and deals with the conflicting arguments between science and religion. This song helped to get Metallica noticed by atheists and intellectuals who found the song to be an exciting take on the debate they were dealing with.
2 ” No Leaf Clover ” – S & M
Through the years leading up to Metallica’s new S & M show with the San Fransisco Orchestra, James was jamming around, playing with a couple of riffs he hadn’t found a song for. When S & M began recording, the band was rehearsing, and Metallica was accompanied by a large orchestra, James new guitar riffs found a place to live in No Leaf Clover. This song was created for the orchestra show in San Fransisco. It was instrumental in showing Metallica as not only beloved metal players, but as smart people who knew how to create exceptional songs.
1 ” Master of Puppets ” – Master of Puppets
This song has yet to be beaten. The song lasts for longer than eight minutes and was the main tool that made Metallica so popular. No one can argue that this song didn’t completely change metal or Metallica. The middle section, with it’s slow, hypnotic power, was beautiful. Unsurprisingly, this song topped the charts and gave Metallica the largest fan base of any metal group.
