LED TV Screen Protectors July 31, 2010
So you’ve invested in a great LED TV and now the kids want to watch it and you’re worried that they’ll damage the screen with their sticky fingers, crayons, toys or even throwing their Nintendo Wii controllers at it!
Cracked tv screens are very difficult to repair and in the majority of cases will require replacing completely, which can cost almost as much as the tv itself. Warranties from retailers often don’t cover screen damage, leaving the consumer seriously at risk in the event of accidental damage.
So how do you protect your display from damage? The best way is using a screen protector, and there’s a wide range available to fit any tv size.
Screen protectors are used in a wide range of applications, from personal to business to industrial, including protecting tv’s on workshop floors, airport lounges, hospitals and even the military.
The protectors tend to be simple and light-weight pieces of high-grade acrylic that sit on top of a tv screen. Most require very little to no preparation and simply attach to the back of the display using straps. Many also include rubber pads to prevent the screen from moving and felt spacers to keep the screen away from the surface of the tv and prevent scratching.
Some protectors also come with more advanced features including non-glare optical grade plastic ensuring clarity and sharp, clear, and vivid high definition viewing. Others are even known to block very low levels of harmful UV light from plasma and LCD televisions, with one brand quoting their screens as blocking up to 92% of all Ultra Violet light in the UVA/UVB and some of the UVC spectrums (250nm to 400nm).
Of course, occasional cleaning of the screen protector will be necessary, but they’re much easier to clean than tv displays as they can be sprayed on and pressed down, and are likely to need cleaning less often that you do currently.
The only disadvantage to a screen protector may be that they do tend to reduce a tv screens brightness by about 5%, but that can be easily remedied by turning up the brightness up to accommodate.
For the personal consumer they’re available from around 19 inches to 55 inches diagonally and are available from a number of international retailers. Compared to the value of the tv the price of the screens is quite low at around 40 ($60) to almost 100 ($160) for the really big ones.
For the business consumer, complete screen enclosures are available for screens up to 65 inches, where the entire television is encased in strong aluminium extrusion and acrylic. The enclosures are available in two colours; a black anodized frame with black matte acrylic, or a silver anodized frame with a frosted acrylic.
The enclosures also feature optional sound enhancement, air vents and fans to ensure proper cooling, and tamper proof screws.
It’s important to research your protector before buying to ensure you choose one that you’re your tv’s make and model, meets your needs and doesn’t blow your budget. Think of a screen protector as an investment for the future – make the right choice and you’ll be enjoying your purchase for years to come.
