Everyone knows that playing an instrument can be hard to do. That’s why it is crucial, that if you want to be successful at learning to play an instrument, you begin doing a few things before you actually begin taking lessons. The first thing you should learn to do is to read music.
Whether you are learning to play the flute, the violin, or th piano, you will need to know how to read music. Most people learned the very basics of reading music at some point in school, but still may need a refresher course on the subject. So take a trip to your local library and get a book on the subject; it will make learning your instrument of choice much easier.
You could also search the internet for websites that teach you how to read music. This can be especially helpful if you do not have a library card or if you don’t live within a reasonable distance of a public library. You might also search the web for videos that you can watch. Oftentimes, music teachers will put videos on the internet for their students to watch. These videos are a great source for learning how to read music.
Before you learn to play an instrument, you should also decide what instrument you should learn to play. You may already have your heart set on an instrument in particular, but that may not be the best instrument for you. For example, if you have asthma, you may not want to play any instrument that requires you to blow into it to create a sound. This means that the saxophone and flute would not be a good fit for you. Try and consider your ideal instrument and the advantages and disadvantages of playing that instrument before you decide to pay for lessons.
Take your time to also talk to musical instructors. You want the person teaching you to not only be good at playing their particular instrument, but good at teaching too. Interview plenty of people and get references before you settle on someone. After all, you are going to be investing time and money into this person so you had better be sure you are getting the most for your time and your money.
To find an instructor in your area you may want to start with your local yellow pages. If you can’t find someone try searching the internet for instructors in your area. You can also try asking at your local music stores. The salespeople there should be able to point you in the right direction if nothing else.
You may also want to get even more information about the instrument that you want to play. Interview some people that play the instrument and get their take on it. If they’ve been playing the instrument for a long time then they are probably going to have a lot of valuable insight to give you.
Finally, the most important thing that you can do is to be excited and enthusiastic about playing. Like anything, learning to play an instrument is going to take work, but a little enthusiasm will take you along way and help you to be more successful.
