In the Fast Lane to Success with Parkway Drive December 31, 2009

Parkway Drive is an Australian band from the beachfront town of Byron Bay. In 2003, the band members took the name of the street where they had their rehearsals and formed a band using the street’s name, which is a real street where they had their all night jam sessions in their laid back hometown.

The charismatic 5 band mates are anything but laid back. They have the ability to involve the crowd when they are playing their seriously hardcore metal music, even though they may have the deceiving look of a bunch of surfer boys. Their sound is among some of the heaviest metal, however.

In August of 2005, they released, “Killing with a Smile”, which was the band’s first full-length album. This led to a flurry of performances and tours around Australia, but Parkway Drive built a fan base as they performed in other countries and the increased visibility is attributable to the increased touring schedule.

Parkway Drive band members currently include:

- Winston McCall – front man and vocals
- Ben Gordon – percussionist/drums
- Jeff Ling – guitarist
- Luke Kilpatrick – guitarist
- “Pipey” O’Connor – bass guitarist

In June, 2006, American record label, Epitaph Records signed the group and released the album “Killing with a Smile” to American audiences. On the Taste of Chaos Tour they played Underoath, Taking Back Sunday, Thursday, and Saosin, which are favorites with the fans and part of their enormous success in the US. Parkway Drive merch enjoyed increased fan demand due to the tour appearances when they performed at the Homebake Festival, Soundwave Festival, Gravity G Festival, and Sound Fest during the August, 2006.

The group enjoyed continued success through 2007 when they played at Underworld, which included the first live performance of “The Siren’s Song”. When asked to participate in the 2007 US Vans Warped Tour, Parkway Drive was the only Australian band to win the honor. When they released their album, “Horizons” in October, 2007, it scored a 10/10 from Blunt Magazine. Going straight to #6 on the ARIA charts upon its release, the album managed to stay in the top 40 for many weeks. With a sound that resembled Metallica’s “Master of Puppets”, the “Horizons” album’s success was attributable to the US Vans Warped Tour in 2007 and Parkway Drive’s exclusive position as the only Australian band on the tour was partly responsible.
