It’s been said before a countless number of times by a countless number of people: Laughter is the best medicine. Everybody likes kicking back once in a while to enjoy something funny and have a laugh or two. It is, however, hard sometimes to choose what to laugh to, as not everything labeled as humorous does the trick. It therefore becomes important to know what are the best comedies out there, those you’ve watched and those you should watch.

There are a few classics in the comedy genre. One of these is Ghostbusters, well loved for its heavy concoction of thrills and puns. Animal House is also one of these, a predecessor to the many movies centered on frat house wildness. Some Like It Hot, Duck Soup, Zoolander, Austin Powers and This Is Spinal Tap are also classic comedy films.

Jim Carrey has starred in a few classics. Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective are some of these. He is a powerful comedian, and a good number of the movies he’s acted in are worth watching.

While plenty other older comedy films exist that should be watched, there are also many recently released comedy films that deserve viewing. In 2008, for example, comedies such as Step Brothers, Tropic Thunder, Pineapple Express, Get Smart and Forgetting Sara Marshall were released. 2009 also saw the likes of I Love You, Man, Funny People and Hangover coming to our screens.

Good comedy was also produced in 2010, with the likes of Due Date, Easy A, Dinner For Schmucks and Kick-Ass being released. 2011 was also not a bad year, with movies such as Paul, 50/50, Crazy, Stupid Love and Hangover part II. Other mentionable comedy films of the 21st century include Borat, Death at a Funeral, Wedding Crashers and Superbad.

There are, of course, plenty more movies worth mentioning, but these should whet your appetite for humor for a while. And while the best comedies are subject to personal opinion, a good joke can be appreciated by all. Funny is funny after all.
